I think I have psoriasis on my genital area.  Its very itchy and red.  Its not scaly, though, like typical psoriasis.  I have had it on my knees for a while now, but it never showed up anywhere else.  Does it make sense that it would be in my genital area even if it looks a bit different?

If you have it on your knees, its a pretty good bet that that what you have is psoriasis. As far as it not being scaly, remember that the skin in the genital area will remain much more moist than other areas like your knees or elbows. So it makes sense that it is more red, and not as flakey.

I had psoriasys there for a while and it went away. Imnot sure why, none of my other patches did.

But one thing I can tell you is that its not a fun place to have it.

The skin gets thin and any "friction" can easily cause it to crack. Its like getting a bunch of tiny paper cuts. Not exactly what you want in the genital area :)

So be careful with steriod creams, as they weaken the skin.

Maybe try to apply Zinc Oxide Ointment when you are going to be in a warm environment? I tend to have the same issue and my job requires that I'm outside and working strenuously. This can cause the groin area to become warm and sweaty. The Zinc Oxide protects the skin from this moisture and helps knock down the rash. You might also want to try bathing the affected areas with a ketokotozole(sp?) shampoo such as Nizorol and make sure you lather and keep it applied for four to five minutes before rinsing.

Will zinc oxide ointment weaken the skin like steriod creams? I have experienced the thin paper cut like cuts that were mentioned. I really dont want make the whole area full of abrasions.

I never heard of thos shampoos, I guess Ill give them a try. The zinc oxide too. What do I have to lose? Thanks for the feedback.

I never thought about getting them in that area until last week when I went to this new Dr. and he asked me if I had them there and then he said usually men get them there more
but thankfully this Dr. and his treatment is helping me with my infected areas!

Often the psoriasis on the genitals is of the "inverse" or "flexural" variety, which doesn't have scale and usually isn't thick like plaque lesions -- it just looks like patches of red on otherwise normal skin. But it itches for lots of people and, in my case, when I relent and scratch it burns like hell. If any topical steroids at all are recommended, they are usually the most mild -- hydrocortizone 1% or less, for example. I use Johnson's Baby Oil or Cetaphil lotion to tame the itch.

The only topical thing I know to help is regular Dead Sea salt bathing. It has helped my husband soooo much.

When you dress, do you go out of your way to hide your psoriasis?
Always, because everyone stares.
I don't have to. It is only in hidden areas.
It depends on who I'm with and where I am.
No. I've learned to live with it.
No. It never mattered to me that much.
